Acer Aspire V3-772G-9656 Review

The Good: The great all-round processor from intel, the i7-4702MQ 2.2 GHz, offers the Acer a lot of multimedia performance. On top of that, the graphics card (GeForce GTX 760M) is a long time favourite in the medium price range.

The Bad: The price of the Acer puts it directly next to some tough competition; the MSI GX60. Even though the Acer packs the punch, it is no competition to the GX60 when it comes to gaming performance.

The Verdict: A very good all-rounder and without a doubt one of the best gaming laptops under 1000 dollars. The price-tag places it however next to an opponent that is one size to big: the MSI GX60.

Why is the Acer a good gaming laptop under 1000 dollars?

The Acer does many things right. Packing the right processor, the Intel i7-4702MQ 2.2 GHz, for the calculating speed of a chess master. Carrying the right graphics card, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760M, for the appropriate amount of graphical talent. And finally, coming in the right sleek package while offering a 17.3 inch full HD (1920x1080) screen. Sadly, it does one thing wrong: It prices itself next to the GX60 which simply offers more significantly gaming performance for the buck. Hence the Acer is the fifth best laptop for gaming under 1000 dollars.

Features

The Acer looks good. Measuring at 16.3 by 10.8 by 1.35 inches, it is a slim designed machine. Paining its chassis in the colour ‘sophisticated black’ adds to this charm. Taking the Acer with you to a professional setting, and you will look perfectly in place. Something which would be different when bringing a MSI or Alienware laptop. Slim doesn’t necessarily mean portability however. Weighing in a 7.5 pounds doesn’t make it a heavyweight, but definitely also no ballerina.

Being a business man by suit, yet a gamer at heart. The Acer carries the right amount of graphical talent to play most high end games on high settings. When looking at the benchmark tests performed by our friends at NotebookCheck, it is clear that the Acer can be your loyal companion through many adventures. Able to run run Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag on high settings at the playable 32 fps or Battlefield 4 at 39.0 fps at the same settings, is proof of this.

The problem arrises when we start making the comparison with its direct rivals. Yes, it outperforms the #2 in our comparison, its little brother. But when comparing the processor, the Intel i7-4702MQ 2.2 GHz, and the graphics card, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760M, side-by-side to the boys from MSI, and there is no denying it: The Acer comes up short. Our #4, the MSI GE60 carries the slightly more premium NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M graphics card and a very similar processor, yet comes in at 100 dollars discount, making the Acer simply look overpriced.

What games will you be able to play?

Batman: Arkham Origins, F1 2013, Fifa 14, Dota 2, Grid 2, Metro: Last Night, StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm, Dead Space 3, Medal of Honor: Warfighter, Dishonored.

To Conclude

A great all-round laptop with both the performance and the looks to impress. But to beat the best gaming laptops under 1000 dollars, more is needed: A great price. And in this competition, there is simply more value to had from the guys at MSI. Both of the brothers at MSI pack more gaming performance and should be considered before getting the Acer.
